Light is time \ Citizen Watches

This breathtakingly beautiful installation is a collaboration between Japanese watch maker CITIZEN and Paris-based architecture firm DGT. The illuminated art forms a surreal and magical landscape which transforms a seemingly ordinary object into what looks like shimmering droplets of rain. With light as the core of human livelihood, the architect from DGT explains the inspiration behind the installation:

“Light was born at the instant of the Big Bang, the universe’s beginning. From beyond the horizon, the rising Sun slowly covers the Earth in light, shadows transform into different shapes, the seasons transit colours in nature and the waxing and waning of the Moon changes. When humanity noticed these things, we unknowingly created the concept of time. In the 20th century mankind digitised time, measured it and continued to economise our time, until eventually we forgot about its relationship with essence of light. Without light we never would have had the wonders of the universe, the richness of our planet or the joy and pleasure of our life.”

Composed of more than 65,000 base plates (the structural devise of the watch) suspended from the ceiling, this video is a spectacular showcase of the installation that premiered at Milan Design Week in 2014. It is a sensory experience within a magnificent light-filled space that re-imagines time pieces as art materials.
