TRANSCRIPT – BRANDING BEFORE BREAKFAST EP67

Hi everyone. I’m Jodie, the MD of Tiny Hunter and today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite topics, which is SEO. What the hell is SEO? It’s search engine optimization. That’s a technical way of saying that Google likes your website. And let’s all face it, we really need Google to like our websites. Now, some people think it’s too technical or is too expensive but the reason I love this is because I can look at a client’s website and see huge opportunity. I can see that their competitors has getting tons of traffic and that maybe the client site isn’t well optimized, which means if we make some changes, they’re going to be getting a lot more visitors. Which is really important, as we all know. So, what are the key parts of SEO?

There are four main parts that I want to talk about today. The first part is the strategy. You need to be focusing on the right actual keywords because there’s no point coming up number one for a term that nobody is ever searching for. And there’s also no point trying to rank for something that is maybe too broad and way too competitive. So you’re never really going to get into that top page. And as they say, where should you hide a dead body? You should hide it on the second page of Google. We really need to be in that first page and preferably in the top three and preferably number one. But you know, it is difficult.

So you know which keywords you want to rank for, then it’s looking at your actual current website. So what is the site structure? The navigation? What pages of content do you have? Do you have some really juicy pages around those terms, so that Google goes, hey, you’re relevant and serves you up as the response to someone’s search. So there’s a lot to be done in terms of your site structure and your site content as an initial body of work.

Then really importantly, it’s about site performance. So how fast is your website? This is becoming even more important in May, as Google makes more updates to how they preferentially rank sites. So, if you’re spending a lot of money on digital marketing but your site is slow, it’s costing you even more money. So we really need our site to be serving up really fast. Obviously, it needs to be mobile responsive and performing very well – super important. So it doesn’t matter if you’re doing SEO, digital marketing, whatever. You need to review your site. Make sure it’s fast – super important. The last thing I want to touch on is ongoing content. So Google likes to to know that your site is up to date, that you’re dishing up lots of valuable content across time. So it’s not just that initial body of work, but it’s also what’s your strategy across time? What are you putting out on your blog so that you are getting in front of those really important customers.

So SEO people, we all need to think about it. It’s really important. It’s a huge opportunity and don’t forget, go check, is your site fast? Or is it slow? Very important. Chat to you developers if you need to get them to speed it up. That’s it for me. It’s time for brekkie.
