No-one likes to be talked at, not in our personal lives or in business. If you want to create a loyal following, and build a strong brand you need to become a master of conversation.
Nobody likes to be talked at – particularly, not me. I remember when I was a teenager and mum and dad and other adults around me kept telling me what to do, how to think and yeah, it just didn’t go down very well. I have to say, I probably was a bit of a brat. Sorry mum and dad! But the same goes for brands. Your audience doesn’t want to be talked at. They don’t want to be told how to think or how to feel. What to buy, when to buy. They want to make those decisions themselves. So you need to change the way you communicate with your audience.
The first step is to really understand your audience and understand how they like to be talked to and create a really engaging conversation. So next time you go to write a piece of communication from your brand, imagine there’s a person from your target group that just pops their head up behind your computer and you actually write to them. And what you’ll find is that your language will shift. It will feel more conversational, will be more friendly and way more engaging.
So the other thing you should do is go online and have a look at some great brands that are doing some great things in the conversational space. For example, Disney. Have a look what they’re doing in the social channels. They are witty, funny and helpful. They are really engaging and it makes people want to come back and continue the conversation. It really helps to build a loyal following and to build a brand.
That’s it for me. Time for brekkie.
