BRANDING BEFORE BREAKFAST EP 57 What the hell is Clubhouse? We overview the newest social platform

Morning. Today I want to talk about Clubhouse; the latest social media platform that’s getting a bit of buzz. So maybe you’ve been wondering what’s this Clubhouse thing? Or maybe you haven’t. But now you are. So I’m just going to give you a really quick overview. So Clubhouse is a social platform that’s entirely, I guess, an audio experience. It’s really trying to create spaces for high-value conversations rather than pre-created content and that sort of thing. So to get on the platform. First, it’s invite-only. So if you haven’t been invited yet, maybe jump on your other platforms, chat to your friends and see if anyone’s got an invite they can share with you. Because when you do get invited, you get two invites, so that you can invite other people.

When you do get on there, you want to fill out your profile. Grab your name. So it’s recommended that you use your actual real name not a business name or anything like that. If you don’t have an invite you can still jump on the platform just to reserve your name. So that’s a great idea because we know how hard it can be to get your name when you want to get it on a social platform. And I might just mention actually, it’s iOS only, so sorry to the Android users, but it’s not ready for Android yet.

When you do get on there, you’ll see you need to follow people or you can follow clubs. So people can create clubs and that’s something you can do. But then the main structure of it is around rooms. So, rooms are spaces that are created for conversations. A room gets created around a specific topic. So in the beginning, you know, jump into the rooms and start getting a feel for it. You can just jump in there. You’ll be on mute and just listen in and if you want you can raise your hand and that means that a moderator can invite you on stage and you could share or ask a question. Or you might just want to dip into a few rooms. And then there’s a leave quietly button, just so you can start getting a feel for how it works. But when you’re ready, you can create your own room and host a topic that you want to share information about, or bring people together to talk about.

So it’s really about those conversations, which is really interesting. It’s quite different in terms of what we’ve got at the moment in terms of social media platforms. It’s much more like the telephone really. But the benefit here is that you’re getting exposure to all kinds of people. It’s an amazing platform to get access to people with really incredible knowledge very easily and also a great space to network.

On your profile, make sure you add in your Instagram and Twitter or you know, whatever you use because at the moment, there’s no direct messaging within Clubhouse. If people do want to contact you and say “I loved that. Can we chat more?” then those are good places for them to be able to do that. So have some fun! That’s it for me. It’s time for brekkie.
